Set Deadlines

Although it’s easier than ever to edit your own website copy with a content management system like WordPress, this can be the enemy of completing and launching your new website. You will need to set concrete deadlines to make sure your project stays on track. Grouping content creation activities into relevant chunks ensures that you complete tasks on time.

Starting with the about section helps set the tone for your copy and assists in determining what key differentiators to focus on throughout the site. Save the smaller, less copy-heavy pages like contact and locations for the end.

Set initial copy deadlines for your team, schedule reviews by all stakeholders, and, finally, determine when to input all copy into the site.

Planning your website content doesn’t have to be as burdensome as it may seem. By investing time in pre-planning and strategy, the process can be much easier.

Write for Humans and Search Engines

For those of you who know the importance of writing your copy for SEO, don’t become too focused on injecting your key search terms so many times that the content becomes unreadable. By naturally including your terms throughout the copy on the site, you ensure that once someone gets there, you don’t sound like a robot.

Also, by using “semantic keywords” you can develop a variety of words that provide the same meaning around your core keywords.

If you are a divorce lawyer, for example, don’t say “divorce lawyer” every few words. Instead, use related terms like “family law” or “child custody.” This will help vary your content while allowing you to keep words that support your search efforts.

Collaborate with Others

Even if you are the sole person in a business, you will want to include others in the review and editing process to ensure your copy is grammatically correct and that it makes sense to others.

If you work in an organization that requires other stakeholders to weigh in or contribute, there are a variety of methods that can help ease this pain. Try to avoid using one single file for all of your content, as this doesn’t allow for easy collaboration.
Using Google Docs makes it easy to share a document for joint editing. Another service for website content collaboration is JumpChart, which allows multiple users to provide feedback and features versioning for easier management of historical edits

Determine Your Target Audience

Before deciding on what content to include on your site, establish who constitutes your website’s target audience. Understanding, or at least identifying, who you are speaking to will help provide clarity as you plan the remainder of your content.

This will also allow you to gauge whether or not information is clear or even necessary. It may help to develop primary, secondary, and even tertiary audiences to make sure that you take into account all of your visitors and their individual needs.

WHAT IS DIGITAL MARKETING?

Digital marketing is the strategy and processes that connect advertisers with their audiences across digital channels. An advertisement itself is a piece of creative shared via digital inventory - the space a publisher makes available for advertisements on its platform.
Digital refers to a number of different channels, all used to uniquely engage audiences and tackle various goals of the conversion funnel. The channels include display, search, mobile, social, and video. It is considered "Inbound Marketing" in that it reaches out to audiences while also letting them reach back out.
Thanks to digital's vast amounts of targeting technology and capturing of personal data, marketers are able to reach both large audiences and more granular segments without compromising scale. This includes being able to target by specific attribute including demographic, behavioral, psychographic, and more. Not only can marketers target groups of people, they can also target specific devices and even individual users regardless ofwhat device they may be using.
In addition, digital marketers are especially determined to measure success of campaigns. A number of user engagements can be tracked such as impressions, clicks, website hits, leads, and actual purchases. In as much, digital makes it easier than traditional media to track Return on Investment (ROI), helping marketers to see the efficacy of their campaigns and make better decisions for optimization and the

2. SEO, SEM and PPC. "The best way (in terms of lowest cost per acquisition) for an IT company or a service-based B2B company to generate leads is through pay per click (PPC) and search engine optimization (SEO)," says Gabriel Shaoolian, the CEO and founder of digital agency Blue Fountain Media.

"PPC and SEO are the most effective way to generate leads because when companies need IT services, they go to Google and search for IT companies. (Something like 90 percent of consumers -- business or otherwise -- go to Google search first.)," Shaoolian says.

To increase the effectiveness of your search engine marketing (SEM) and PPC campaigns, use "long-tail keyword phrases, which are highly targeted search terms typically consisting of three words or more," advises Brett Prince, president, Marketaire, a provider of social media and Internet marketing news.

"Long-tail keyword phrases drive targeted traffic due to their specificity, and they're less competitive than related, shorter search terms, which tend to be higher in volume and more competitive," Prince says.

In terms of SEO, "consider something educational, something your audience could benefit from," says Prince. "Once you've identified your target keywords, create content around it. You may be amazed at how fast you will rank and start generating traffic and leads for this term."

Content marketing is any marketing that involves the creation and sharing of media and publishing content in order to acquire and retain customers. Content marketing is also defined as a strategic marketing approach focused on creating and distributing valuable, relevant, and consistent content to attract and retain a clearly-defined audience — and, ultimately, to drive profitable customer action.[1] Content marketing can further be characterized as a step from earned to owned media. This means that by establishing own brand channels, brands increasingly act like media companies and fulfil corresponding functions like entertainment, information and social interaction. Ultimately, brands can become their own communication-medium and thereby replace paid-media channels.[2]

The type of content businesses share is closely related to what they sell. However, the content's main focus is on the needs of the prospect. This information is consistently delivered and can be presented in a variety of formats, including news, video, white papers, e-books, infographics, email newsletters, case studies, podcasts, how-to guides, question and answer articles, photos, blogs etc.[3][4][5][6]

Perfection

Perfection

All I ever wanted was to be part of your heart
and for us to be together to never be apart.
No one else in the world could even compare,
You’re perfect and so is this love we share.
We have so much more then I ever thought we would,
I love you more then I thought I ever could.
I promise to give you all I have to give,
I’ll do anything for you as long as I live.
In your eyes I see our present, future, and past,
by the way you look at me I know we will last.
I hope that one day you will come to realize,
how perfect you are when seen though my eyes.

True love

 True love

True love comes only once in a lifetime
yet it lasts an eternity
It has the power to crush someone so deeply
while at the same time they know
there’s no one else in the world they’d rather be with
True love will knock down the walls of difficulty
to be with that special one
It will take your hand and fly over the world
into a place where there’s no pain, no tears
True love will withstand the test of time,
forever waiting until its love is returned
It never fails, never dies, never lets go of the one they
love.

Love Me

 Love Me

Love me in the Springtime, when all is green and new,
Love me in the Summer, when the sky is oh so blue,
Love me in the Autumn, when the leaves are turning brown,
Love me in the Winter, when the snow is falling down.

Love me when I'm happy, and even when I'm sad,
Love me when I'm good, or when I'm oh so bad,
Love me when I'm pretty, or if my face is plain,
Love me when I'm feeling good, or when I'm feeling pain.

Love me always darlin', in the rain or shining sun,
Love me always darlin', after all is said and done,
Love me always darlin', until all our life is through,
Love me always darlin', for I'll be lovin' you!

ne last try

ne last try

The things I've done, I can't explain.
I know because I know it hurts and causes pain.

I can't say I didn't know what I was doing.
I don't know what I was thinking or what I was proving.

We had a special love but I threw it all away.
I regret what I've done every second of the day.

If I could change the past believe me I would.
I would take away all the pain, if only I could.

So, now, all I can ask for is one last try
I'll love you

I Love You

I Love You

You're kissable and cuddly;
You're lovable and sweet;
You thrill me every minute,
And sweep me off my feet.
You're charming and disarming,
Desirable and true.
You inspire and impress me,
And that's why I love you!

You're in Love

You're in Love

You wake up and he’s on your mind.
Another subject, you can’t find.
You used to think it was just a bluff.
But now you realize, you’re in love.

You see him and can’t help but smile.
Think of him for miles and miles.
Weak in the knees when he comes through.
You know his eyes see right through you.

You don’t care what people say.
You want to be with him all day.
Seeing him you can’t get enough.
And you can see that you’re in love.

YOU!!!!

Like a star you came into my life
You filled my heart with joy
You took my pain as if it was yours
You provided me with love that no one could give me
You gave me a shoulder to cry on
You were my pillar when I was falling
You were my strength when I was weak
With your smile you made my living on earth worthwhile
With the soft words you whispered in my ear
Made me realize that I was in Love indeed
Without you next to me my life is meaningless
Every day I sit and pray that you will remain as sweet as you
are
And that is why I will always Love you as long as you let me.

Deep Inside My Heart

Deep Inside My Heart

Now that you are here
I have nothing to fear
With you is where I belong
I know it, I feel it so strong
Nothing has been more clear
That it is your love I hold so dear
Deep inside is the cry of my heart
I never ever want us to part
I am a hopeless, romantic man
Doing the best he can
To show you for sure
That my love for you is pure
I will do whatever it takes
I don’t care about the stakes
You and only you I want
A prayer I know God will grant.

You Are My Passion

You Are My Passion

How can I describe what you are to me?
Mere words do you no justice -
For you are an infatuation that does not end -
A fascination of the nth degree -
A passion that consumes all thought and deed
And fills my life with (poetry/ecstasy).

Everything to Me

 Everything to Me

You are the light when there is no sun.
You are the rainbow after the rain is done.
You are the star that twinkles in the night.
You are the moon that glows so bright.
You are the wind that whistles my name.
You are the love when the world is the same.
You are the flowers the bee's never miss.
You are the beach the warm sun kisses.

U Make Me

U Make Me

You make me laugh when I want to cry,
Make me live when I want to die,
Make me smile when I want to frown,
You turn my life upside down.
Believe in me when no one else does
You’re my now, my is, my was.
When you call my name I begin to blush,
I'm afraid people notice I need you so much.
When I'm with you time flies by fast.
It's like the present is the past.
I need you more than you can believe,
Love you more than you can conceive.
Think about you every night and day
And hope my life can stay this way
I don't want it to be any other way.

If Only You Knew...

If Only You Knew...

If only you knew,
how my heart overflows with love for you.
If only you could see
the way you fill my hopes and dreams.
You're the owner of my heart,
the ruler supreme.
Even in the dark of night,
I've only to think about you
to feel your loving light
and from this world I drift
feeling as if
I'll never touch the ground again...
If only you knew.

If only you could guess
how I hear your voice when others speak;
for you hold the key to my happiness,
and it's always you my soul seeks.
If only you could feel,
how your very presence
has the power to heal,
all the wounds inside me.
You've made me abandon
the pain of yesterday,
and you've shown me
that the past can no longer
stand in the way
of what I hope to achieve...
If only you knew.

If only you could realize
the way you've shown me
that it's better to give
than to take,
and whatever I do,
I do for your sake.
I'm willing to give you my all
and expect nothing in return.
But, oh how I yearn
for you...
if only you knew.

Show me

Show me

You know I love you dearly
but I cause you so much pain
I cannot find true happiness
and you feel you are to blame
it seems so unjust
for me to make you feel this way
it's so hard to decide
whether I should leave or stay
staying is not wise
as faking happiness is exhausting
leaving's a bit worse
for your heartbreak I would be causing
so show me what to do
help me to be strong
lend a helping hand
give me your shoulder to cry on.

The Perfect One

The Perfect One

He holds me when I start to cry...
makes me smile with just his eyes...
shares my hopes, dreams, and fears...
wipes away all my tears...
I love him without regret...
I just haven't found him yet.

A walk to remember

A walk to remember
Love is patient, love is kind.
It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.
It is not rude, it is not self-seeking.
It is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.
Love does not delight in evil, but rejoices with the truth.
It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
Love never fails.

A one way love can never thrive;

A one way love can never thrive;
It needs reciprocation.
And so in order to survive
My love needs affirmation.
So throw your caution to the sky,
And let your heart command.
You'll find that it will not deny
A love which must expand.
Come now, to me, with open arms
And sweep me off my feet;
And then display for me your charms,
To make my love complete.
My one way love will terminate
Without your inspiration.
So, therefore, please reciprocate
With no more hesitation.

Grizzlies' Jordan Farmar: Scores eight points in Tuesday's Game 2 loss

by RotoWire Staff | Special to CBSSports.com
Farmar compiled eight points (3-11 FG, 1-5 3Pt, 1-1 FT), two assists, two steals, and one rebound in 31 minutes during the Grizzlies' 94-68 loss to the Spurs on Tuesday.

Farmar climbed over 30 minutes for the first time since April 5, but the added court time didn't help him make marked improvement with his counting stats. The Spurs defense has been a dominant force all season, but Farmar will face the least resistance given that Tony Parker is among the opponent's weakest individual defenders. Even so, Farmar rarely commands the offense, as Tuesday was the fifth game in a row in which he failed to reach double figures in the scoring column.

The first usage of the English word "Assamese" is noted in colonial times; based on same principle as Sinhalese(সিংহলী ভাষা), Nepalese (নেপালী ভাষা) and Canarese (কন্নড় ভাষা), derived from the Anglicised (ইংৰাজী ভাষাৰ ৰুপানতৰন) word "Assam"[15][16] with the suffix -ese, meaning "of Assam."[17]

In contrast, Western Assam (পশ্চিম অসম / নামনি অসম) in pre-colonial times was known as "Kamrup" (কামৰূপ)(instead of Asama,[18][19][20] and considered a politically, socially and culturally separate unit from the rest of the state.[21]

In the 16th-century, the Ahom kingdom (আহোম ৰাজ্য) came to be known as the "Kingdom of Acham" to the Mughals(মোগল); and following them, the British.[22] In 1682 the eastern Kamrup (পূব কামৰূপ) was annexed by Ahom kingdom[23]and the expanded kingdom continued to be called "Kingdom of Assam"[24] till 1821 when the Ahom kingdom becamepart of the Burmese Empire (কোনবাউং ৰাজবংশ).[25]

Assamese was originally the local language of the Assamese Brahmins (অসমীয়া ব্ৰাহ্মণ) who taught Hinduism (হিন্দু ধৰ্ম) in Assam.[26]

Just as "Assam" was associated with the Ahom kingdom till the 19th century "Asamiya" was used for the subjects and soldiers of that kingdom who belonged to different ethnic and linguistic backgrounds and not solely to the Ahom community (আহোম জনগোষ্ঠী).[27][not in citation given]

After Assam became part of British India (বৃটিছ ভাৰতৰ), the newly constituted province came to be known as Assamafter its largest constituent, and the name Assamese / Asamiya (অসমীয়া) came to be associated with theAssamese language erstwhile known as Kamrupi (কামৰূপী).[28]
Different views[edit]

According to Yasmin Saikia, "the group that now identifies as Tai–Ahom (টাই–আহোম) were historically seen as Assamese people. However, the term ethnic Assamese is now associated by the Indian government atDelhi (দিল্লী) with the Assamese speaking Indo-Aryan (ইণ্ডো-আৰ্য) group (comprising both Hindus and Muslims) of Assam (অসম). The latter group is the majority people of Assam, while the Tai-Ahom people were a dominant minority during the Ahom Rule (আহোম ৰাজ).[29]

“delicious, busy, bustling restaurant. Loved it!”

We took my son and daughter in law for, making reservations a month in advance. We had a 7:45 reservation, was immediately seated, in a cozy front table for four. There are communal tables as well. Lots of little bites and plates as well as substantial plates, including pizza. They do not rush you even when there is a line out the door. The food was excellently prepared and wanted to get a taste of everything. I plan to return. They serve only wine and beer, we brought our own wine, $20.00 corkage. The wait staff was knowledgeable, efficient and friendly. It is a causal restaurant with a loud vibe, not for special occasions but it worked well for a birthday celebration for four. It is a shared plates type of place so better to go with four at least.

Social media has inspired a new kind of shopping

Around the middle of 2014, Hemanth Kumar Venugopal tested a fashion product discovery platform in India, which received a positive response from around the country. In April 2015, Hemanth, along with Merlyn Zhang, Jongkeun Lee and Jinha Lee – former a Chinese national; the latter two being Koreans – launched Wishary.com, a Bengaluru-based social product discovery platform. On this platform, users can post their desired products or services and receive relevant recommendations from others in the community. The product was initially launched in Shanghai under the name of Xingyuyuan.com — a Chinese product discovery portal which is still operating.

“Though the e-commerce industry has now grown in leaps and bounds, there used to be a huge gap that was needed to be addressed. The industry was completely discount driven, and only the ‘size of marketing budgets’ determined what brands were being consumed by the customer. With this product, we have tried to shift the trend. It enables buyers to choose what is right for them rather than treating fashion like a commodity that is to be blindly consumed,” says Hemanth, Co-founder, Wishary.Hemanth Kumar Venugopal, Co-founder, Wishary

Other similar platforms are focusing on the one-dimensional aspects of the e-commerce enabler market – social shopping, text search, or product discovery. Wishary, however, aims to provide a holistic fashion experience.

While talking about the product, Hemanth gives an example. If a buyer is on the lookout for footwear and comes across a pair of stilettos, she simply has to take (click) a picture of the pair and post it. The platform will provide her product recommendations from the company’s e-commerce partner sites. She can use predictive search or other filters, to refine the results.

An intelligent algorithm keeps track of a buyer’s likes and dislikes, to make the experience more personalized. The increased engagement induces brand loyalty, and greatly impacts user retention. The buyer can confidently purchase the right product, create an expression, and share it with friends, all within the app.
Flourishing business

As of now the company is funded by Wishary, Korea. The chunk of the investment has gone into building the patent-pending image search engine. It has also used the investment for building the team. The founders are in talks with a few venture capitalists, and they are looking for the right proposal and partner to propel future growth.

The revenue model is based on commissions from sales. However, there are multiple other monetization opportunities which the company is looking into. Since April 2015, in the space of just three months, they have registered about 3500 users; and the traffic has grown to over 50,000 visits a month.
Existing competition

Roposo, Voonik and Wooplr are similar websites that are making the discovery platform a competitive marketplace within the e-commerce sector. Voonik is a kind of online personal stylist that handpicks the best clothes for you, based on your body type and style preferences. Roposo now presents fashion choices from across 150 web-stores with categories ranging from apparel to footwear, and accessories to lingerie. All of these products are curated and recommended for each user, as per their individual taste. Wooplr is another funded startup in the same space – but their focus is more on helping shoppers discover fashion products in stores in the offline market.

In June this year, Voonik raised $5 million in Series-A funding from Sequoia Capital and Seedfund. In March 2015, Roposo.com also raised $5 million in Series-A funds led by the technology venture investor, Tiger Global.

Finally it made sense

Failures teach lessons. It also hones one’s skills. By 2014 it, was clear that the whole world wanted apps, and that they needed engineers to build them for rich user-experiences. Anshul set up shop in Jaipur and employed Android and iOS engineers to deliver services to global clients. Upside9 connected with businesses in the US and India to deliver apps as per their request. She invested Rs 15 lakh in the business, which began to generate revenues straight away. She would charge her clients based on a milestone or on a upfront basis to deliver their apps. However, she realised that she had to take her own bets too. She used the money generated from the services business to fund her own ideas.

She brainstormed with her team and began jotting down experiences and services that the Indian consumer could explore. The first app she launched was Karosell, a platform for people to sell their “used” accessories, books, and paraphernalia. The app is a month old and the Upside9 team is out raising money to market the idea.
The competition

Pre-owned sales are the highest in cars and electronic items. Adoption across other segments has been less rapid. “The Karosell app will focus on smaller accessories like collectibles and books,” says Anshul. She adds that it’s a market, which is not yet been explored in India and could be scaled up over a couple of years.

According to Technopak the fashion accessories market is valued at $3.4 billion in India alone. Greendust is the largest company in India to sell pre-owned electronics. The company has raised $40 million from Vertex Ventures and Kleiner Perkins Caulfield and Byers. So fund raising in this segment has generated some interest and Upside9 can raise money if it hones its business model.

Upside9 will guarantee the quality of the product by partnering with various agencies, who will verify quality of the product. The Karosell platform will allow buyers to negotiate with the seller directly. The price discovery happens through a chat module in the app. The app is available on iOS and Android.

AliBaba, the billion-dollar Chinese company, connects sellers directly with buyers through a chat module. The data collected from this social community of sellers and buyers is very powerful to customise products according to individual preferences.

“Such businesses have to figure out guaranteeing quality and also manage customer services better,” says Harminder Sahni, founder of Wazir Advisors.

However, the real challenge for Anshul will be scaling up. While app services continue to be bring revenues, Upside9’s apps would need capital for marketing. The Karosell app will require some mechanism to build trust should be built in by the company for consumers to buy pre-owned items. Credibility could go away in an instance if the items delivered are fake or damaged.

“Such businesses have potential if there is reasonable acceptance by consumers. But it is a risky business, which is dependent on the entrepreneur’s ability to build the market,” says Mohandas Pai, MD of Aarin Capital.

Anshul has learnt from her previous startups that entrepreneurship is continuous learning. She definitely has the appetite for risk. Otherwise, she would not be an entrepreneur. The studio model of Upside9, through which they will launch their apps, could work if the apps are able to create a market of their own. The first launch, Karosell, needs a lot of testing beyond Jaipur and Delhi. Once it is accepted by four cities, then the company could raise capital easily. Perhaps the biggest upside is Anshul and her determination not to accept failure.

Failure is frowned upon in India, and it’s

Failure is frowned upon in India, and it’s worse when you are a woman. Anshul Khandelwal failed twice before she started making any money. Her current startup Upside9, a studio model for app development, has created a slew of apps that will bemonetized later this year. But before she tells us about Upside9, she narrates how her learnings from her low phase have made her a stronger entrepreneur.

After graduating from engineering college in 2006, she moved to Bangalore to work with a large IT Services firm. But entrepreneurship was always on her mind. While she was working, her friends told her about opportunities in Mathematics tutorials, if lessons could be delivered over the Internet. Anshul, who founded Upside9 in 2013, says, “I was good at Mathematics, so a friend and I decided to start a chat-based tutorial.” The company was called Epadai.com.Anshul Khandelwal, founder of Upside9, launched Karosell, an app which is a platform to sell used collectibles and accessories

Anshul decided to aggregate NCERT Math Text Books onto her site and then train students, from Classes 8 to 10, based on queries posted on the site. The website also offered one-on-one lessons, which cost Rs 250 per chapter. She created an audio file of all the formulae, which could be downloaded to any MP3 player. Anshul tied up with four schools in Bangalore and began to scale up the idea. She also created voice recordings of all chapters for students to revisit in case they had doubts about a problem. But she faced certain challenges.

“We would work in the day and start training students from 5 pm in the evening,” she said. After two years of running the business, the workload of running a startup and working in a corporate had taken its toll. The two things that she learnt here were:
When the business model works, quit your job and give your entire time to the startup
You need to build a great team

“My partner walked out in the middle of us scaling up and I could not tie in the pieces to run operations,” says Anshul. Epadai.com was shut down in 2009. But the amount invested in the company was less than Rs 1.5 lakh. It was not a costly error, but more a waste of time and energy. However, she lost the opportunity to scale up the idea, which was perfected by TutorVista and sold for more than $127 million to Pearson PLC in 2011.

Anshul would not give up her dreams of working on her own. She continued working in IT Services till 2013, when she started a food delivery startup, which would deliver meals late in the night for working professionals. Two months into the business, she realised that the operational costs, in the form of managing deliveries, would be too high for her. The money required to scale up such an idea was a lot and she found it could burn her savings in six months.
The learning from this short-lived stint was that not all ideas can be scaled up and that some ideas require a lot more capital to manage the complexity of the business.
The stickiness of the customer was very important. On average, an individual would have to order five times a month to keep this business running.

That was when some introspection, when she travelled across Rajasthan for six months, helped her realise that she should leverage eight years of IT Services experience. She took the leap and turned full-time entrepreneur, opening an app studio called Upside9.

The David v/s Goliath scenario

Many a times, when startups progress positively, they face a much powerful competitor in the same space, vying for the same pie in the market.
Bhavish explained this scenario when Ola Cabs had to face the challenge posed by Uber. While he admits it was frightening, he spoke on the importance of creating a key differentiation and a unique value proposition that helps organizations to keep growing, in spite of the more powerful and better funded competitors.

Naveen added other views. He explained their strategy of exploring very early in their life-cycle, other markets where the needs may be similar. He talked about Inmobi’s global expansion into suitable ad-tech markets outside India.

Kunal Shah talked about the Indian market and its huge untapped potential. His counter to competition was that it is about great products. He further added, an entrepreneur has to be optimistic and pessimistic at the same time.

While celebrating success of startups is important, chronicling their struggles is invaluable as they hold a treasure trove of business lessons.

Lets discuss the bumps on the road, not just the rainbows at the end.

It is well known that of the many who want to be entrepreneurs, few take the plunge and fewer succeed. While the success stories of entrepreneurs are often chronicled, their hardships and struggles are rarely touched upon.

With the media latching onto the entrepreneurship bandwagon and the rise of online content amplified by social channels, the successful entrepreneurs of today get their fair share of limelight. Founders of startups which have become unicorns are revered. The buzz around their success often leads to a persuasive perception that life has been easy for them. There is a belief that fundraising has been easy for them. This belief is also strengthened by the fact that many of them have created unicorn companies in less than ten years.

While the media covers their successes, and to an extent, the disruption they ushered in, it doesn’t often look into their struggles.

It is important to celebrate the struggles because there are great lessons hidden for aspiring entrepreneurs. The perception that unicorns of today have had it all easy is simply wrong.

I recently heard Joe Gebbia speak at TED2016 on how he decided to turn their loft into a lodging space to make ends meet. With the promise of an air mattress and breakfast, they were able to earn extra money. The first three renters were enough for them to think of scaling this idea. Thus, Airbnb was born.

Their early struggles and that of other breakaway companies are well documented and we can learn a lot from it. However, the struggles of our Indian unicorns are not so well documented.

This led us at Kalaari to think how we could get a few of the founders on a single platform. The launch of Kstart provided an opportunity to bring together these founders and share their insights with the next generation of entrepreneurs.

It led to the genesis of a session titled “Bangalore Boys”. We were pleased to have Mukesh Bansal of Myntra, Kunal Shah of Freecharge, Bhavish Aggarwal of Ola, and Naveen Tewari of Inmobi. With David Rowan of Wired magazine as the moderator, we couldn’t have asked for more.

A few pearls of wisdom from the session are as below:
Found a disruptive idea, what’s next?

Like Airbnb, once a founder finds a disruptive idea, the struggle just “compounds”. He needs to find like-minded people to join him. The first set of people should be almost as good a risk taker as the founder. They have to be completely convinced of the idea. They have to believe that joining a startup to create a disruptive solution is a risk worth taking.

Kunal Shah gave an interesting view on the difficulties of putting together a team. He said that people had their apprehensions of joining a tech-startup founded by a philosophy graduate. Do prospective employees, value the credentials of the founders more than the idea itself?

Mukesh Bansal added that he also had his share of challenges in the early days while putting together a team as employees did not want to leave their comfortable jobs to join startups.
Moving to where the talent is.

A solution could be to move to a place where the availability of talent is more. While it may not be feasible, it can work well as per Bhavish Aggarwal, who moved to Bangalore from Mumbai after series A funding. He said that entrepreneurs should find the initial talent and then ensure that “talent breeds talent” within the company. The first set of people have to be exceptional and entrepreneurial so as to create an exceptional organization.
Talent, technology, and capital — what binds it all?

At startups, problems are a given. There will be problems with capital, technology, talent etc. While companies will address these challenges and keep moving forward, there has to be something that binds the company together as they move towards a greater common goal.

Naveen Tewari emphasized a great deal on the importance of creating an organizational culture that can bind the human capital to navigate such challenges. While talking about his struggles, he talked about the most important lesson he learnt — that has to be always, people first. It is the people who create a great culture and that can lead to great results.

In early 2015, there was a lot of buzz about how a startup had raised $200,000 within three months of its launch. The startup in question was Orobind – an ‘at-home’ personal fitness tech startup. Behind the glitzy headlines and all the hullabaloo was a story of rejection, a near-death experience and a strong resolve to make the idea work.

Founded by IIT-Roorkee graduates Satya Vyas and Shubhanshu Srivastava in December 2014, the startup was rejected 52 times by investors before getting their first yes. During this period, it came agonisingly close to going bankrupt at least twice. Co-Founder Satya Vyas recalls, “In 2014, when we were trying to raise funds for Orobind, no one was even considering us. It was a really testing phase.”

Looking back on how he managed to stay afloat and keep the team together, Satya says, “I saw every ‘no’ as a challenge. I was determined. But that being said, I also put a lot of rational thinking in place. After every meeting, I would sit in a coffee shop or some place that offered solitude. I would then dissect and analyse what made them say no. I would try and reason if the problem was with the idea, the way it was presented, or the sales pitch. And then, I would try and improvise.”

Once when Orobind was running out of cash, the investor that Satya was banking on said he needed more time to deliberate and decide. Satya immediately lined up one more meeting, which was very critical because if this second investor said no, it would have been all over for Orobind. “So before the second meeting, I just sat in a small tea shop at the corner of the street for 10 minutes. These 10 minutes were the loneliest moments I have ever experienced. When I looked up my mobile to see if I could call someone to calm myself down, I realised it was my own fight and I needed to deal with it myself. So all I did was have a cup of tea and walk into the meeting.” It was this meeting that led to Orobind getting funded.

says Kunal Shah, Indian entrepreneur, investor, and founder of FreeCharge.

Founded in 2010, FreeCharge is a leading Digital Payments platform in India. Customers across the country today use FreeCharge to make prepaid, postpaid, DTH, metro recharge and utility bill payments for numerous service providers. The idea of Freecharge stemmed from the thought that talk time could be made “free” by giving away coupons and vouchers along with recharges. This was achieved by returning the amount paid by the user for recharge in the form of shopping coupons. Unlike many startups, which made it big in India, by taking inspiration from solutions that worked elsewhere globally, FreeCharge cut through the clutter with its pioneering idea.

Kunal Shah believes that entrepreneurs should also see themselves as players in a game of chess, otherwise they will end up as pawns fighting against one another. He says, “Only when you distance yourself from the game, are you able to figure your place in the larger scheme of things and take timely, objective decisions.” He advices young entrepreneurs to be able to let go of their business if needed. He says, “Entrepreneurs often make the mistake of considering businesses akin to spouses. But business doesn’t work that way. Sometimes, acquisitions, mergers, exits, are all a necessity in the interest of a better outcome.” Kunal Shah has lived every bit of this quote. In fact, he exited his first entrepreneurial venture – PaisaBack, a B2B venture that provided cash-back promotions for organised retailers, so that he could focus on FreeCharge. Kunal says, “While PaisaBack made profits with which we were able to start FreeCharge, we realised that the scalability aspect of FreeCharge was much larger than what PaisaBack offered. So the shutter came rolling on PaisaBack. And, five years after he started FreeCharge, he sold it to Snapdeal and it was hailed as one of the largest deal in the Indian consumer internet space.

The move was aimed at creating a platform that offers a seamless transaction experience and makes every day online payments safe, easy, frictionless, and rewarding. Today, Kunal dons the hat of a CEO at FreeCharge and is looking at rapid expansion and bulking up the digital payments platform. Kunal has also invested in startups like TableHero, Razorpay, LifCare, and Zilingo.

Of the many success factors that helped him in his #NaaSeeHaanTak entrepreneurial journey, Kunal quotes the importance of doing homework. He strongly believes that youngsters need to understand and analyse the subject matter before taking the entrepreneurial plunge. He says, “I stood in malls and surveyed more than 2,000 people to understand if the consumer was ready to buy into the idea. Put together, I have done about 500 hours of cumulative research before starting FreeCharge.” He says,“It is this homework that helps you demonstrate a workable solution and helps to make Naa Se Haan possible.”

Kunal’s startup mantra for success ~ “Ambition alone doesn’t work. Missions do.” And Kunal lives up to this mantra on every step of his journey.

A Student Protest That Went Unheard: What Happened At Assam University

Even semester (2nd, 4th and 6th) examinations of Assam University (situated about 20km from Silchar) were scheduled to start from May 2, 2016. There was a severe scarcity of electricity and water in and around the university campus. Due to a shortage of hostel rooms on campus, a sizeable number of students reside in an adjacent area called Irongmara, which was worst hit by the electricity and water crisis.

In such a dire situation, students found it almost impossible to even appear for the exams, let alone fetching good marks. A group of students met with the then Vice-Chancellor of Assam University, Professor R.R. Dhamala, and sought a feasible solution. But the university administration came up with an absurd, if not downright ridiculous proposal. The administration stated that the students who would not be able to appear for the exams as per the schedule could appear for the same at a later date, but the administration would not be accountable for any delay in results. There was no time limit regarding the re-examination schedule and publication of the late result. For final semester students, this would mean putting their career in complete jeopardy.

Thus, the students started protesting against the decision. But no one anticipated that this would lead to a brute show of power by the administration. The protests that began in the morning of May 2 went on throughout the day. The administration remained adamant, and the students also did not back down. They blocked the main university gate and the VC, along with other teaching faculty were locked in for over 15 hours.

Early next morning, the police entered the campus and used lathis and rubber bullets against the agitating students and forced them to unlock the gates. Female students were also not spared, despite the fact that there were no female police officers present. At least half-a-dozen students were injured and had to be taken to the hospital.

The next morning saw the fortitude of the students of this university. Reportedly, one of the students who suffered a severe injury in his right leg limped his way to the gate at around 7 A.M and was among the first to go on a hunger strike. The number of students to join him went on increasing and by 1 p.m. the university main gate was again teeming with hundreds of protesters.

When the situation seemed beyond the control of the administration, the Deputy Commissioner of the Silchar District came to the University. A meeting was arranged with students and their representatives. The exams were postponed by a couple of days and a few sanctimonious hollow promises of punishing the perpetrators of violence were made. So far, no action has been taken against anyone.

Everyone eventually wrote their exams on May 7. But alas! The movement fizzled out before the culprits of the atrocity were booked.

The university administration was well within its right to disagree with the demands of the students. But “disagreement” cannot be synonymous with “atrocity”. The success of a democracy is judged by the degree to which it allows dissent. Only in despotic and totalitarian regimes is dissent muzzled by brute force. In democracies, dissent must be placated with dialogue.

Whether this incident forms a part of a chain of grotesque incidents that unfolded in other universities across India is a debatable question. But this trend is alarming not only to the students but to the very spirit of our democracy. After the incident, there was only one thing that was striking – deafening silence.
